Navigation
The basic use of a Stylus pen is for navigation through your phone instead of using your finger. Initially, we had passive stylus pen which its only use for going through your phone without the usual smudge from your finger. It can select files, scroll through web pages or social media and everything you do with your hands on screen.
Writing
You can decide to write with it too or even calligraphy can be done in dedicated apps whether built-in or not. Active stylus pen is better suited for this purpose because of its precision and manoeuvrability. You would tilt the pen to give a more slanted writing and other tweaks depending on the device.
